Mount Vernon Washington is the county seat of Skagit County and the largest of the many towns and communities. Public golf courses and several other public parks within the city limits offer sports options and can greatly reduce the stresses of everyday life. The prolific agriculture business provides wonderful Farmers Markets from spring to fall at several locations. To the east, Big Lake and Clear Lake offer public docks and a variety of water sports.
The city of Mount Vernon is the home of the annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival every April. The two major tulip growers and their display venues, RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town, are both located west of town. There are other numerous types of “events” throughout the year, one of the main ones being the annual Skagit Valley Highland Games & Celtic Festival, with competitors from around the world! The Skagit County Fair is held here every August at the county fairgrounds.
Mount Vernon is home to Skagit Valley College and the McIntyre Hall Performing Arts auditorium on its campus. Including the historic Lincoln Theatre, listed on the historic register, Mount Vernon, as the cultural hub of Skagit County, draws a variety of nationally recognized performers! Mount Vernon hosts a symphony, chorale, museums; opera, dance and theatre companies. Mount Vernon is also home to the largest of the three county hospitals, Skagit Valley Hospital and Regional Clinics. Several other satellite clinics are conveniently located around the city.
