As a resident of Mount Vernon since 1966, I have come to know and love this area very well, and have delighted in pointing out to newcomers the many advantages of living in this beautiful rural valley, the gateway to the San Juan islands. Prior to my real estate life, I was the owner/operator of the Susan Cooper School of the Dance (ballet, tap, jazz, etc.) 1967-1985, selling it to 2 of my students who currently operate it as the Skagit Valley Academy of Dance – now in the 53rd year of continual operation! Several of my students continued on in careers performing around the world. I am a life member of Dance Educators of America, after serving many years as Secretary/Treasurer of the Northwest Region.
Since becoming a REALTOR(R) in 1989, my goal has been to locate that “perfect home” for Buyers, and to customize a personal marketing plan and implement it for Sellers. Many satisfied clients agree I live up to my motto: “You Can Depend On Me!” I wholeheartedly welcome referrals from other agents, and am conscientious in my dealings with them. Through the years I have become very familiar with neighboring Snohomish and Whatcom Counties, having many pleasant transactions there, in addition to Skagit County!
As the 1997 Skagit County Association of REALTORS(R) President, my primary focus was on promoting awareness of, and adherence to, the National Association of REALTORS(R)’ Code of Ethics. Skagit merged with North Whidbey and is now North Puget Sound Association of REALTORS(R) (NPSAR). Serving as the Chair of the Professional Standards Committee at NPSAR and WA REALTORS(R) has been an honor. I served as a State Director and on several WAR committees most years since 1990, including as WAR Treasurer in 2001. A consistent multi-dollar producer since 1989, I have been the recipient of several Local and State REALTOR(R) awards, including President’s Award, Community Service, Achievement and Distinguished Service. The most prestigious NPSAR being the 1997 Skagit County REALTOR(R) of the Year, 2012 NPSAR Lifetime Achievement Award and the 1995 & 2018 NPSAR Distinguished Service Award!
I am a strong believer in continuing education, which improves my ability to assist and better counsel my clients. The Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR), Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), Graduate REALTOR(R) Institute (GRI) and Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES) designations have been achieved thru many additional hours of continuing education. I also acquired the Prudential e-Certified designation, indicating I have extra internet-savvy. and I have been a member of the Commercial Brokers Association, enjoying the challenge of handling commercial property sales.
The coveted CRS designation is held by only 3% of REALTORS(R) nationwide, and is achieved by increased education and higher production. I acquired this in 1997 and have served in Leadership since 2006 on the WA State CRS Chapter Board as a designated Area Representative for Skagit, Whatcom, Island and San Juan Island Counties, plus as Programs and Awards Chair 2015-2017. I was honored as the recipient of the 1998 WA Chapter Community Service Award, the 2012 WA Chapter CRS of the Year Award and the 2018 WA Chapter Appreciation Award.
I was invited to join the Skagit Friendship House Board of Directors, serving as President in 2007. This organization serves the homeless men, women and children in Skagit County with 2 homes (holding 24 each), 2 transitional homes, and a cafe’, providing counsel, shelter & meals – a perfect fit for a REALTOR(R) wanting to make a difference! After being rotated off for term limits in 2011, I have continued to advocate for, and serve annually, for fund raisers!
Since 2009 Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce has been a recipient of my volunteer efforts, as a weekly Visitor Office greeter/representative, proof reader, Ambassador (2017 Committee Chair) and Volunteer Coordinator of all fundraising events. I was delighted to receive the 2007 July Upbeat Award and the 2014 Bernie Award.
Involvement with Additional organizations began in the late 1960s with the Mount Vernon YMCA (swim team Treasurer), Skagit Valley Tulip Festival (Little Miss Tulip Chaperone), Skagit Cultural Center Association (President), event volunteer for Economic Development Association of Skagit County and Celtic Arts Foundation Highland Games. Skagit Performing Arts Council (SPAC) (Treasurer) has been an especially passionate endeavor, as SPAC played a major role in the creation of McIntyre Hall Performing Arts & Conference Center located on the Skagit Valley College campus. I also served as Vice-President of the Northwest Ballet Theatre Board, based in Bellingham WA
Notably, the Skagit Valley College (SVC) Foundation Board of Governors has been the longest tenure with 18 years, beginning in 1982, including 2 terms as Secretary and as President in 1999. After being rotated off for term limits, I was very humbled to receive the status of EMERITUS in 2005. I continued to be involved as a Greeter for many events, and happily accepted an invitation to return in 2017! I’m currently serving on the Early Childhood Learning Committee, in partnership with United Way, to create a new dimension of education on the SVC campus with an Early Learning & Childcare Center for Skagit County!
Since 1966 I have enjoyed my membership at St, Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mount Vernon, at various times as a choir member, Pledge Secretary, Finance Committee member, Family Promise dinner server, and for several years now the Collection Plate Counter Supervisor and a Vestry Member!
In summation, I am tremendously proud of my 3 children, 6 Grandchildren and 9 Great-Grandchildren. Sadly, none live in Skagit, but we do stay in close contact! I never tire of my active life in this beautiful valley, and would look forward to sharing the many outstanding amenities as a tour guide, and assisting others in making a meaningful real estate decision based here. April is an especially great time to visit our Annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival – Check it out!!!
